Can Llufriu
Can Llufriu began in Ses Parres street where the married couple Toni Llufriu and Marianna Capó, who came from the Menorcan countryside, lived. The couple had five children, and Marc, the eldest, had the idea of setting up a shop dedicated to the countryside and aimed at farmers and stockbreeders, although the project involved the whole family.
With the purchase of the house in Ses Parres street in mid-November 1947, the commercial activity of Can Llufriu began. Initially, products were sold for farm work, such as hoes, ropes, canvas, esparto grass, buckets, insecticides, etc.
Of the brothers, Marc and Tòfol were in charge of the shop’s installations; Tònia was the shop assistant; Magdalena did the shopping and Toni was in charge of the administration.
Over the years the business prospered and new products were added. They were pioneers in the assembly of curtains and curtain rails throughout Menorca, mattresses and other specific products such as the classic Calzados Gorila shoes or Friso. At that time, up to eleven people worked in the shop.
But the business also went through hard times, such as the economic crisis of 1990 and the death of Toni, the younger brother, in 1994. These obstacles were overcome and the business expanded its range of products to include decorative items and auxiliary furniture. At that time, the part that was used as a warehouse in Murada d’Artrutx street became the shop window of the establishment.
Currently, the business is run by Magdalena Llufriu Capó, who maintains the origins of Can Llufriu with products that can only be found in Ciutadella in this shop.
