Alpargateria La Concepció

Ever since Jerónima Fernández opened this espadrille shop in 1940, the last section of Carrer de la Concepció has been imbued with the unmistakable smell of esparto. In 2006, she transferred the premises to María Visitación Hernández, who still runs it today.

The shop, which is situated in a pedestrian area, is lower than street level. The façade has an entrance door and a window with two small exterior-facing display cabinets.

The baskets hanging on the façade contain a wide range of shoes from the Balearic Islands: porqueres (laced leather shoes), patateres (boots with the tongue over the laces), eivissenques (Ibizan espadrilles), avarques (traditional Menorcan sandals) and a range of other styles that, for eighty years, have dressed the feet of local people who take pride in wearing shoes produced by Balearic manufacturers. It should also be noted that the business has maintained a line of local trade with artisan producers of traditional espadrilles from Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera.

The shop’s friendly and welcoming service has earned it a loyal customer base comprised of both local residents and tourists who visit in search of a souvenir to remind them of their time in the city. The business is also a regular stop for the Spanish royal family during their visits to Palma.
