Bodega Biniagual
Bodega Biniagual winery is the heart of the estate’s agricultural operation, which has a long winemaking tradition. In fact, it was an important centre for vine cultivation and wine production until phylloxera finally reached Mallorca in the early 20th century after having destroyed many vineyards all over Europe. Biniagual was no exception and so the prosperous viticulture came to an end. In the middle of the last century Biniagual was an abandoned place and half in ruins.
In 1968 the Graf family bought the Biniagual estate with the promise of restoring viticulture and thus reviving a part of Mallorca culture. Gradually, the estate was restored, and the village was recovered; and above all, vineyards were planted again, which now occupy 34 hectares of wine-growing land. They also began to produce their own wines and in 2005 the first wine of this new phase was marketed.
Today, the second generation of the family oversees the wine production company. The estate has fourteen houses, a chapel and a historic winery, a picturesque and peaceful place surrounded by vineyards, an olive grove, citrus groves, almond, carob, and fig trees, among others, as well as fields dedicated to the cultivation of cereals.
They follow the rules of organic farming, an agricultural production system that integrates natural resources and techniques to minimise the use of fertilisers, phytosanitary products, etc. to guarantee sustainable food production. In addition to all this, a flock of 300 sheep helps with the natural fertilisation of the soil.
The basis of the quality of Biniagual’s wines is the work in the vineyard, which is carried out entirely by hand, from pruning in winter to harvesting in summer, in harmony and with respect for nature. For its wines, the Bodega Biniagual focuses above all on the native varieties, typical of the island of Mallorca, such as Manto Negro and Prensal Blanca, to give each one of its wines an unmistakably Mallorca character.
Nowadays, the Bodega Biniagual also offers visits and wine tastings by appointment, during which the different wines of the winery can be purchased in its wine cellar.
