Ca madò Bet dels Siurells
Coloma Cañellas is the current manager of Ca Madò Bet dels Siurells, the oldest siurelleria in Mallorca, which was founded by her grandmother Elisabet Amengual. Known in the ceramics world as Madò Bet, she founded the siurellera business within the family, which had already been involved in ceramics for several generations.
The tradition was continued by her daughter, Francisca Palou, until around 2015. A few years later, her daughter Coloma took over the siurellera business, resumed the family tradition and recovered the name Siurells de Ca Madò Bet for the company.
Dedicated to making siurells, she has revived the figures that her grandmother used to make, such as mythological animals or beasts (snakes and horses with wings, mermaids, men with ox heads, etc.), as well as those made by her mother, which are much more traditional, such as peasants, men and demons on horseback.
Today, she has added new figures to her repertoire that her ancestors did not make, such as motorbikes, aeroplanes, windmills and film characters, among others, which have found a place in today’s market. A few years ago, she also introduced new colours when making demon figures, such as red and black.
Although more than a hundred years have passed since Elisabet Amengual first began making siurells, very little has changed in the way they are made. They are 100% handmade, including the whistle that all the figures have inside, their signature feature, together with the white base and the green and red stripes painted in a random or irregular pattern.
Siurells are typical Mallorcan products, traditionally associated with the municipality of Marratxí and mainly with the village of Sa Cabaneta. In the past, siurells were considered a by-product of local potteries and were made by the wives of the pot-makers. These days, although most siurells are no longer made in the potteries, they are still made by women.
