Ca na Clara

The history of Can na Clara dates back to 1969, when Miquel Morlà Coll started working in the Es Barrancó orchard, where he grew oranges, apples, plums, persimmons and loquats. To sell all these products, he decided to open a fruit shop in 1974 to support his family.

Miquel also collected milk from different places (farms) and took it to the Insular Livestock Cooperative of Menorca (COINGA) to sell it. So it was that he became the distributor of Coinga brand milk in the town of Ferreries. He remembers that the first milk containers were metal boxes with returnable glass bottles, which were far more sustainable than today’s containers.

Since the day they first opened, one of the distinguishing features of the establishment has been their sales method, technically known as assisted sales, where people do not select the product themselves, but rather vendors always prepare it to the consumer’s liking. Over the last 50 years, changing eating habits have led Ca na Clara to introduce a large number of products from all over the world to Menorca.

When Miquel retired in 2000, his two eldest children, Bosco and Nina, took over the business. Despite the change of management and the expansion of the shop, they decided to keep the name Ca na Clara as a tribute to their mother, Clara Allés Pons, who founded the business together with her husband. Nowadays, it is a family-run grocery shop where you can find quality products, organic fruit and vegetables, delicatessen and dairy products, as well as a section of fair trade products.

Inside the shop they still have the very first weighing scale they ever had in the shop, a Mobba, which they still use to prepare the orders. They stand out as one of the first shops in Ferreries to make home deliveries.
