Ca na Fayas
The birth of this business dates back to 1925, when the married couple Maria Allès and Sebastià Fayas opened a shop in Carrer de Sant Onofre. There they sold basic daily food products such as fruit and vegetables and, above all, the different products from the family’s own pork slaughtering: sobrassada, carn i xulla, cuixot and pork, among others. This shop was open until 1943, when it had to be sold to meet the medical expenses of Sebastià Fayas’ illness.
A few years later, in 1946, his daughter Maria decided to continue with the family business thanks to the experience she had acquired. Together with Joan Triay, her husband, she set up a grocery shop similar to her parents’, but with more diversity, and where the local product would continue to be the protagonist, such as the artisan cheeses from the Menorcan countryside, which over time became a reference point for the establishment. At that time, one of the most appreciated products in the shop was the black pig’s lard, as at that time it was cooked with lard and not with oil; moreover, it was in great demand by the local ovens to make one of Menorca’s typical pastries: crespellets.
In the 1980s, the granddaughter of the founders, Catalina Triay, known as Nina Fayas, continued her parents’ business, and today two of her daughters, Maria and Teresa, represent the fourth generation of the family to work in Ca na Fayas.
In 2004, Nina decided to expand and move the business because the space had become too small and also to adapt to the new food health regulations. Thus, the current establishment has doors on two streets: one on Carrer de la Murada d’Artrutx, on the same street where the old shop was just two houses up, and the other on Avinguda de Jaume I el Conqueridor.
Today Ca na Fayas maintains its roots, and following the tradition continues to focus on the sale of Menorcan products, mainly artisan cheeses, sausages and typical products of the island, always betting on the local product, to promote the island’s economy.
