Ca na Riera
In 1931, Juana Riera and her husband, Domingo Marqués, opened the Ca na Riera food shop in a house that used to be part of the Santa Magdalena Hospital. They sold produce from the countryside and also other products brought from outside the island, all combined with the sale of meat from the slaughtering that they carried out in the shop itself.
The couple left the lloc de S’Hostal de Ciutadella, the farm where they worked, and settled in the village where they lived in the upper floor of the shop. As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that they paid for both the shop and the house with the money they obtained in the Christmas lottery of 1935, when “El Gordo” fell in Ciutadella.
The five children of the couple started to become familiar with the business, but it was Nina, the eldest daughter, who together with her husband Joan Socies took over the grocery shop. Later, their son Arnau joined them and introduced gourmet products, and at that time it was one of the first delicatessen shops in Menorca.
Mariola Fiol, fourth generation at the helm of Ca na Riera, continues the family business started by her great-grandmother, together with her husband Toni Salord. They reformed the shop as we know it today, unifying the space and extending the sales area. In this way, they left elements of the old Santa Magdalena Hospital in view, such as a column attached to the wall and the “footprint” of some of the doors.
Nowadays, Ca na Riera is a reference in Ciutadella in the commercialisation of delicatessen products, cold meats and cheeses from Menorca and other places, as well as fruit and vegetables, personalised trays and pâtés and pizzas with Menorcan mozzarella, as well as other products from the shop that they make by hand. They have also set up a workshop where they make take-away food, all of which they make themselves.
