Cafés Samba

Andreu Frau Santandreu started producing coffee on a small scale on the roof of Can Costa, where he roasted the beans in a small roaster, and even ground them, to sell them to some cafés and bars in the village. When the business grew, he decided to open a shop with his friend Joan Caldentey in order to increase coffee production. The business continued to grow and they moved again, right in front of the shop, where they still are today.

Rafel Frau Llinás, Andreu’s son, joined the business. Although he started working as an electrician, he decided to learn the coffee roasting trade and continue with Cafés Samba. He even bought Joan Caldentey’s share when he retired, and therefore became the sole owner. Rafel’s four sons, Andreu, Miquel, Rafel and Bel Maria, are currently running the business.

Cafés Samba is one of the five coffee roasters that continue to produce coffee in Mallorca, despite the fact that there are more than 70 brands on the island. After three generations, they still maintain the same blend of coffee that their grandfather used to make in the traditional way.

Interestingly enough, they are known throughout the municipality for their old slogan: “If the coffee is Samba… Who cares about the coffee pot?”
