Can Bernadí Nou
Can Bernadí Nou is located in Jaume I street in Sa Cabaneta, in the same place where the ancestors of Maria Amengual Capó haqd always worked. She has been a master craftswoman and ceramist and has been running the workshop since her father’s retirement in 1998. She is the fourth generation of the family to devote herself to the craft in a totally artisan way, and the third generation to produce exclusive siurells and embroidered jugs.
Her grandfather was from Can Bernadí de Sa Cabaneta and had nine children, who were also devoted to the world of clay. At the end of the 19th century and during most of the 20th century, her grandparents, Antoni Amengual and Maria Serra, were already working with clay, especially siurells and embroidered jugs.
Around 1980s, her parents, Joan Amengual and Maria Capó, continued with the pottery trade on a plot of land in Jaume I street, where their ancestors had always been. Her father called the siurelleria gerreria Can Bernadí Nou.
The technique of making siurells has not changed at all over the years, although Maria has adapted it to modern times and, apart from maintaining the old ways of the house, she has always created new pieces, either for orders or for collectors. She is frequently visited by artists and well-known personalities, as well as magazines, television programmes, etc.
Nowadays, Maria continues to attend the pilgrimage of Sant Marçal, on 30th of June, to sell siurells, as she wanted to continue with the tradition of setting up a stall where many Mallorcans used to go to buy their siurell.
