Can Bou

Jaume Rosselló was the founder of the Can Bou grocer’s shop in 1904 in Carrer Alexandre Rosselló, which opened at 7.30 a.m. and never closed on any day of the week. In 1927, they moved to the premises in front, where they still are today, managed by Jerònia Rosselló, the fourth generation of the family.

This establishment is closely linked to the life of Alaró. In fact, it was one of the first to have a telephone in the village, and during the Civil War it was a collection and distribution point for ration cards.

Can Bou sold haberdashery, household goods, groceries, food, almonds and carob beans. Interestingly enough, they were among the first to sell cologne. Their main products were noodles in bulk, spices for slaughtering and the mixture they made of linen and turpentine to treat wooden doors, which they still sell today. In fact, it was once said that Can Bou was like the Galerías Preciados of Palma in Alaró. Today, you can find all kinds of articles.

Can Bou still has the wooden display cabinets and shelves, made by a carpenter from Alaró, as well as the hydraulic tile flooring. The entrance doors have old signs of “brand name industries” (Orion insecticide, Iberia dyes). You can see the old scales, although they are no longer in use.

Located in the heart of Alaró, almost a hundred years after Can Bou opened where it is now, we can still notice the smell, the essence and the magic of this unique place in the village.
