Can Corretja

Can Corretja is the only broom-making business left in the Balearic Islands. Located next to the Roman Bridge, it is currently run by the third generation of the Cerdà family: Josep, father and master craftsman in brooms, and Juanjo, son and master craftsman in musical instruments.

Around 1940, Juanjo’s grandfather started the business of selling brooms of all kinds. At that time there was a great need for this product and so four or five master craftsmen worked there. After school, the children would go to peel reeds, the women would make bunches of palm leaves and the men would assemble the brooms. They still keep the old tools they used to make their products.

Nowadays, only Josep and Juanjo do this work, and they go to the Albufera to get the reeds and the palm leaves from the mountains. As the business was dwindling over time due to the appearance of other cleaning materials, they reinvented themselves. In addition to brooms and baskets, they now use the leftover pieces of cane to make bird calls, toys for children and musical instruments, combining canes and gourds.
