Ca’n Sion

In 1878, Melcior López founded Ca’n Sion, a fishing establishment in Plaça del Banc de l’Oli, 12. At that time, most of the items such as pots, esparto grass baskets, bamboo canes, hemp yarn, etc. were handmade.

Andreu López Serra, Melcior’s youngest son, took over the business after his father’s death in 1930. The shop sold only a few items, continuing with the handcrafted manufacturing technique. The non-existence of nylon or the production of bamboo canes, which Andreu himself and his sons Andrés and Ernesto were in charge of cutting, drying and straightening, made Ca’n Sion’s products unique, earning them the fame they still enjoy in the sector. Andreu introduced the fibre cane after a trip to Andorra with a view to selling it in Mallorca. This marked the first change in the shop’s policy.

Andrés López Smit, grandson of the founder and two-time world sport fishing champion, took over the business, prioritising the distribution of goods over handcrafted products. He also maintains the personalised sale of products, specialising in everything related to fishing.

Ca’n Sion makes an outstanding contribution to the personality of the area around the Plaça del Banc de l’Oli, currently located at number 7. With the introduction of new materials and techniques, the business expanded its range and now has two more premises in Ciutat Jardí (2005) and Portitxol (2015).

Today, the business is run by Andrés López Arabí, the fourth generation of the family, who has made his own contribution by opening the website www.cansionpesca.com, a new website for the company.
