Cas Matalasser

Cas Matalasser was born as a craft trade specialising in mattresses. Margarita Fortuny Sintes founded the business in 1954, but for 10 years she had already been in charge of the whole process of making mattresses: shearing or buying the wool from the farms in Menorca, popularly known as llocs, washing and carding the wool and, finally, renewing the covers of the old mattresses. In addition to working with wool, they also made mattresses out of cork, clim (vegetable fibre), borra (cotton threads), etc.

His son, Jacinto Pons, continued the family business with the help of his wife, and lived through the process of transformation from artisan to commercial work, especially with the introduction of new materials for mattresses, such as foam, springs, etc., on the market. In addition, the offer was extended to all kinds of textile products for the home and the manufacture of made-to-measure pieces.

Cas Matalasser is a reference in the Tanques del Carme neighbourhood, where the shop is still located, and in Maó as a whole. The signs of identity are the spirit of service, proximity and personalised attention to satisfy customers.

The business is run by the founder’s grandson, Fernando Pons Olivé, who started helping out in 1993, when he was only sixteen years old, and who continues to work there today.

He has modernised the shop in all aspects. He has introduced leading brands in the world of rest and textiles, without neglecting the offer of quality products at affordable prices. It has taken into account materials for people with allergies and special measurements. It also offers complementary services such as advice, transport, assembly and removal of furniture, among others.

Finally, this family business has also adapted to the world of new technologies: it has started online sales, created a website and combines tradition and traditional values with the digitalisation of local commerce.
