Cas Trinxeter

The origin of this well-known establishment is in the town of Sineu where, around the year 1900, Josep Ordinas Escales began working as a trinxeter (knife grinder). Together with his wife Joanaina Bernat, he formed a family dynasty of cutlers that is still active today in different municipalities on the island. The couple had four sons who learned the trade from their father and, so as not to compete with each other, they set up their own businesses in other municipalities. Guillem and Josep stayed in Sineu and Antoni moved to Porreres.

Around 1940, Tomeu Ordinas settled in Muro where he practised the same trade of trinxeter that he had learnt from his father. In 1975 Gabriel Miralles Tugores, husband of Joana, daughter of Tomeu Ordinas, continued the family tradition and took over his father-in-law’s workshop.

Currently Biel Miralles Ordinas, the couple’s son and fourth generation of the family, has been running the business since 2009 when he took over from his father. He has been awarded the title of master craftsman by the Consell de Mallorca. He makes a wide variety of traditional Mallorcan knives and handcrafted trinxets.

The workshop where Biel works is at the back of the shop, where a refurbishment was carried out some time ago. A wide variety of items are on display and for sale, from kitchen knives to trinxets, as well as other personalised items. If the customer wishes, the blade of the knives can be engraved with their name.
