Ceràmiques Mallorca

Ceràmiques Mallorca began its activity in 1946 in a garage near the Sant Agustí convent, in Felanitx. A year later it moved to its current workshops at Carrer de Sant Agustí, 42 in the town. During all its years of existence, it has never abandoned the philosophy of combining tradition and innovation, and of integrating industrial, artisan and artistic production techniques.

Nowadays, Maria Francisca Bennàsar Obrador, the youngest daughter of the founder Pedro Bennàsar Monserrat, is at the head of Ses Cerámiques, as the people of Felanitx call their workshops. A name which, in turn, has become the name by which the family is known.

Ceràmiques Mallorca had up to 30 permanent workers and has always counted on the collaboration of external professionals and artists, involved throughout the second half of the 20th century. Among them, renowned artists such as Josep Bover, Jaume Mir and Joan Maimó, among others.

The founder Pedro Bennàsar was one of the pioneers in the use of white majolica on the island of Mallorca. In the 1940s, with the support of one of the Lladró brothers, he began to import the raw material from Manises (Valencia).

The current manufacturing is based exclusively on the company’s own designs, created in its plaster workshop, used by the company for the production of originals and moulds. The techniques used allow for both modern, cutting-edge creations and pieces of a more historical nature, or a combination of both. They have a wide range of products ranging from crockery, vases, and bowls to different decorative objects.

All stages of production, from the preparation of the clay to the decoration, are executed in their workshops. The products undergo two firings: first the bisque firing, for the raw pieces, and then the glazing, naturally with glazes and pigments suitable for food use. Each handmade piece is decorated with its own freehand decoration.

Another branch of production is the production of murals and street plaques, which are applied to prefabricated tiles. A large part of the historical and informative murals on the island of Mallorca, as well as the street plaques in villages such as Felanitx, Montuïri or Alcúdia, come from the workshops of Ceràmiques Mallorca.

Decades of experience, on the one hand, and the technical and artistic training of the younger generations, on the other, ensure the survival of this emblematic company for the time being, in the midst of a world adverse to artisan production.
