Colmado Santo Domingo

The story of this little shop permeated with the smell of sobrassada (a raw, cured sausage from the Balearic Islands), camallot (a local ham) and cheese began in 1886 when it was Colmado Londres, a typical neighbourhood grocery store.  In 1960, it was renamed Fruiteria Londres, and it wasn’t until 1986 when the business was transferred to Pedro Amengual, the father of the current owner, that it was given the name Colmado Santo Domingo.

Every day, Pedro Miguel, the second-generation and current owner, opens the metal grille of his small grocery store full of typical island foods, including cold meats, liqueurs, jams and cheeses. According to Pedro, who also serves the local clientèle, the most sought-after product among tourists is the sobrassada de porc negre (a cured sausage made from the meat of the native Balearic black pig).

The shop’s interior is tiny, with wooden shelves on either side for the products and cold meats and sausages hanging from the ceiling. At the far end, a small table serves as a sales counter.
