Eines Mallorquines, Toni Mas
This family business was opened in 1926 by Toni Mas Pons, who, after working as a farrier and blacksmith in other workshops, took the plunge and set up his own business. After his death in 1955, the business passed to his son, Toni Mas Niell, who was only sixteen years old when he had to find a partner because the farmers did not trust him. This partner was Pedro Mascaró, with whom he shared the company until he retired. They saw the decline in the use of livestock for cultivation, which led them to innovate and focus on the manufacture of tools.
Toni Mas Ramis, son of the former, already showed an interest in blacksmithing and forging at a very early age, so from the age of sixteen he started working with his father to learn the trade. Years later, they decided to change the name of the company to emphasise their star product and called it Eines Mallorquines Toni Mas, a name that remains today.
When his father retired, Toni took over the reins of the business, which has passed through three generations of the family, who have worked the iron with great care to create the so-called Mallorcan tools. As mentioned above, these are the company’s main product, ranging from tools to barriers, well collars, staircases, railings, etc. The most demanded by the clientele are: marger hammers, hoes and xapetes.
The transformation has been key for the business, as they have grown in number of employees and space, because times change, and they have had to adapt. And that is why they believe that the company is still surviving. It is important to bear in mind that Eines Mallorquines is one of the last companies to make this type of tools in a traditional way. The craft of blacksmithing and forging is not easy, it takes a long time to learn and requires a lot of dedication to be able to make a well-made tool, but all this effort is worth it when you see that these tools help many other people to earn a living every day.
