El Bazar del Libro

El Bazar del Libro is a bookshop where visitors can find first editions of books, together with second-hand and older volumes, some of which become quite valuable treasures, given that they originate from past eras and are pieces of our history. They also have newspapers, photographs and other small items. You can also enjoy sampling some wine or a cup of coffee while reading or listening to an improvised piano concert.

The business opened for the first time in 1978, under the ownership of Toni Llabrés, who ran it until 2011, when it was handed over to Joan Toni Cantarellas and Cati Bauzà. These local residents and customers left their respective jobs to dedicate themselves body and soul to the business. Their life changed from one day to the next.

The premises date back to 1870 and were originally a bulk wine cellar, Bodegas Enderrocat. Since 1922, it has been home to Confecciones Segura and some of the furniture has been preserved, such as display stands, bookcases, tables and more. There is also a New York player piano dating back to 1870.

Stepping into this space is as if time has come to a standstill, a place with collector’s items, advertising from the 1950s, school books from the 1940s, period maps and toys or collector’s books.

On the counter of what was once a former bookshop-cafeteria, there is a book with signatures of actors, politicians, neighbours and, as Joan tells us, YouTubers who read the article ‘Palma is the best city in the world to live’ by The Times, in which the bookshop is cited as one of the most charming and friendly shops on the island.
