Forn Can Joan Serra
Can Joan Serra is a bakery and pastry shop founded in 1962 by Joan Serra and Maria Mascaró, who married after Maria was widowed at a very young age from her previous husband, who also came from a family of bakers and with whom she had three children, the Veras.
At first, the founders opened a small oven inside the house in Port d’Alcúdia, where they lived and went every day to fetch wood to bake bread. At that time, the municipality was very small and had few inhabitants, mostly fishermen, and, little by little, the oven became well known.
Today it is run by the third generation of bakers, which is composed of the siblings Antònia and Xisco, after taking over from their parents, Gaspar Vera and Maria Cifre. They remain in the same location as always, but with a more up-to-date oven. They strive every day to offer good quality to their customers without losing their traditions. A curious fact is that, after a few years of renovating the establishment, they found some rocks from the sea as well as some sand, which had been used in the past to keep the wood-fired oven warm.
They are members of the “Bread from here, oven and tradition” brand, which distinguishes establishments with a bakery that make the different types of bread from the Balearic Islands. The oven was awarded the AFEDECO innovation prize as a mark of quality for its products.
Specialising in traditional Majorcan pastries, such as empanadas, cocarrois, rubiols and ensaimadas, Can Joan Serra is considered by the inhabitants of Alcúdia to be a “traditional” bakery, where they go every day to buy bread and sweets on Sundays and holidays.
