Forn de Ca sa Camena

In 1912, the Amengual Vich family returned from Argentina and bought the premises where they opened Ca sa Camena, one of the oldest bakeries and pastry shops in Palma. It is believed that the premises, located in the Santa Catalina neighbourhood, may have housed another bakery much earlier, specifically in 1843, but it has not been possible to corroborate this with documents. Since then, four generations of the family have worked in an artisan way, making all kinds of bread, briochería, ensaimadas, pastries and nougat.

As a curiosity, the name of Ca sa Camena comes from the breed of the dog of the old possessió (large rural estates typical of Mallorca) that existed in this area in the 17th century, a “ca mè” (retriever). As there were no bakeries, people made bread at home and took it to the possessió, which had a wood-fired oven, to bake it.

After his father’s retirement, in 1983 Pep Amengual Barroso took over the bakery that his grandparents had opened. Nowadays, his daughter Àngels runs the day-to-day running of the business. They also have another point of sale in Esporles.

They are members of the “Pa d’aquí, Forn i Tradició” brand, which distinguishes establishments with a bakery that make the different types of bread from the Balearic Islands. The interior has a unique counter with several glass windows and glass shelves displaying traditional confectionery products such as panades, cocas, ensaimadas, etc., as well as a wide variety of sweets and cakes.
