Ganivets Ca’n Ordinas Sineu
Located in the old quarter of Sineu, the history of this establishment began at the end of the 19th century, when Josep Ordinas Escalas started working as a cutler. He and his wife, Joanaina Bernat, had four sons: Antoni, Guillem, Tomeu and Josep, who learned the trade from their father. To avoid competition between the brothers, Antoni moved to Porreres and Tomeu to Muro, and Guillem and Josep stayed in Sineu.
Josep Ordinas Bernat inherited his father’s workshop in Sineu. He dedicated his whole life to working in the workshop, where he made all kinds of knives and farm tools, such as saws and sickles, above all. In the forties of the 20th century, on market and fair days, he sold his products from the stall he set up in front of the doorway of the small shop.
At the beginning of the 1970s, the current owner’s parents took over the business, who, in addition to selling in the shop, also held fairs and markets. In 2012, Josep Tugores Ordinas, the fourth generation of the family to run the cutlery shop, joined the business. The name of the business comes from the surname of his maternal great-grandfather and the town where the workshop is located.
In the beginning, the clientele was basically Mallorcan and mainly farmers. Years later, apart from local customers, he began to sell to people from abroad. In fact, Josep Tugores comments that, since he has been running the business, a very important part of his sales correspond to foreign visitors. Currently, they have many personalised and special orders requested by customers. In the shop, in addition to knives and blades, you can also find country tools such as xapetes, saws, pruning shears and cowbells, among others, as well as kitchen utensils such as wooden spoons, cutters, baking tins, baking dishes, etc.
