Imprenta Moderna

La Imprenta Moderna began its activity in 1934 when Jaume Mut, a native of Llucmajor, decided to set it up in Campos. A few years later, in November 1941, he returned to his hometown and set up the business at Carrer de Sa Fira, 10, in Llucmajor.

In 1944, the printing house was acquired by Miquel Barceló Tomàs, when Jaume wanted to move to the city. Miquel kept the name and the location of the business until today, after 80 years have gone by. His son Miquel is now in charge of the printing house.

Handmade typography, letter by letter, has always been used at the printing house. Now it also uses the offset technique, which is a printing method that consists of applying an ink, generally grease, on a metal plate, generally made of an aluminium alloy, and which is a process similar to lithography.

In the past, it was used to print an infinite number of things, such as shoe bags, labels, invoices, letters and envelopes, programmes for cinemas or musicians or the town’s announcements. Incidentally, it is worth mentioning the constant presence of the poet Maria Antònia Salvà, who was very interested in graphic arts.

In 1954, the shop was remodelled and the counter and shelves still remain. Old printing presses are still in use.

Today, they continue to print all kinds of brochures, cards and posters, which they combine with the sale of stationery, bookshops, gift items and other small services.
