Joieria Carles
The history of this establishment began in 1906, when Bartomeu Carles Vives opened l’Argenteria, Rellotgeria i Òptica Carles in Santa Clara Street, where it is still located today. As a child, he worked mainly with the sea, but after working in the silver mesh coin purse factory, he changed his trade.
Bartomeu went to Barcelona to acquire knowledge of jewellery and also some notions of watchmaking. In his shop, he had his own jewellery made and commissioned. They also sold jewellery from Barcelona and other pieces such as candlesticks, coffee sets, medals, watches, etc.
It should be noted that the first shop assistant was Joana Llorens after she married Bartomeu in 1913. They had only one son, Bartomeu Carles Llorens, who took over the family business from his father in 1935. He married Joana Gorrias, who also joined the jewellery business. It is worth mentioning that at this time Joan Moll, known as Joan es rellotger, started working in the watchmaking department and worked in the company until his death in 1994.
The third generation of the family also joined the business. Bartomeu and Joana’s two daughters took over the shop, while their son, also Bartomeu, went to study jewellery in Barcelona, at the Can Druguet factory-workshop.
Today, two great-grandchildren of the founder of Can Carles are part of the company, sons of the couple formed by Bartomeu Carles and Sisca Coll: Guiem Carles is in charge of the optics, and Tolo is in charge of the jewellery, silverware and watchmaking. All of this means that for four generations they have continued to be a reference point in Ciutadella, as well as offering a good repair and after-sales service.
