La Florida

Around 1870, Pere Cortès Aguiló left Palmato to go and live in Inca, where he got married and opened a shop that sold fabrics and haberdashery under the name of Can Pere, in calle Major de Sant Bartomeu, nowadays plaza de Espanya. Due to their close relationship with the Philippines, from where they imported products, they very soon gave it the nickname Filipines.

Pere Cortès’ sons, Jaume and Antoni, inherited the business, which was passed on to Jaume’s sons, Joaquim and Pere, who separated it. Pere kept the fabrics and Joaquim kept the haberdashery in the adjoining premises, which he named La Florida and which he ran with his wife, Joana Maria Forteza. In 1988, his children, Immaculada Concepció and Rafel Pau Cortès, took over the business, representing the fourth generation.

The haberdashery is recognised in many parts of the island for its quantity and variety of articles, making it one of the most well-stocked in Mallorca.

The shop has modernist counters and is part of a building constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. Inside it maintains the meticulous distribution with wooden shelves, and in the basement there is a room with a barrel vault.

It is an establishment that preserves the personalised, familiar and customer-focused spirit that makes the retail trade so special and distinctive.
