Antigua Casa Capó

Antigua Casa Capó was born in 1920 when Jaume Capó Pizà founded this establishment in Carrer de Joan Bauzà, in the Pere Garau neighbourhood. Jaume Capó was a pioneer in the repair, restoration and marketing of sewing machines in Mallorca. In the early years he had three employees to carry out different tasks in the workshop and combine this work with that of a postman, until after a few years he devoted himself entirely to sewing machines.

He was a forerunner in the repair and sale of machines for the footwear and leather sector, due to the large number of factories that existed at that time in Mallorca. Jaume Capó also manufactured several models of machines for this industry located in towns such as Llucmajor, Inca, Lloseta, Alaró, etc. In fact, to this day they still have one of his machines that they had in one of the last shoe factories that closed in Alaró, with the brand name J. Capó.

Around 1966, the second generation formed by his daughter Jerónima Capó Mestre, together with her husband Miquel, continued with the business, until they retired in 1997. Then, their son-in-law Salvador Arona and his son Heraclio took over the business, but in 1999 Heraclio suffered a serious accident that made him unable to carry out any kind of work.

Salvador Arona bought the premises on Carrer de Lluís Alemany i Pujol where they are currently located, although they moved to Plaça de Fleming for four years. They continue with the sale and repair of sewing machines of all makes and models, as well as the sale of spare parts and sewing accessories of all kinds such as pattern rulers, threads, needles, etc. In other words, everything necessary for the world of sewing.

The interior of the establishment is made up of a large number of different sewing machines, from the basic ones for beginners to the most complex and professional ones. They also have the most recognised brands on the market today: Singer, Alfa, Elna, Juki, Pfaff, Husqvarna, Brother, Bernina, Bernette, etc. In the upper part of the shop, old models from different periods and brands are exhibited, recalling the history over all these years.

The initiative of the founder, as well as that of his descendants, to keep alive an activity that is once again booming among people of all ages, should be highlighted.
