Teixits es Tren
Tejidos es Tren is a family business in Palma with deep roots in the textile world, whose history spans four generations. The business originated in Inca, where Francisco Forteza sold fabrics and clothing at the entrance to his house and went every week to the markets in Sineu, Inca, Llubí and Campanet. Francisco was the great-grandfather of Mayte, the current owner, together with her husband Joan Gelabert.
Over time, his son Paco, Mayte’s grandfather, moved the business to the textile section of the Inca railway workers’ cooperative (SFM), founded between the late 1940s and early 1950s.
In 1956, the commissary moved and was located near the station where the Inca train arrived, right at the beginning of Eusebi Estancia Street, now Parc de Ses Estacions. At this stage, the second and third generations were already working together. Later, a second commissary was established in 1976, which maintained the location and commercial activity of the previous one.
Once the commissaries closed in 1984, Pep, Paco’s son and Mayte’s father, opened his own fabric shop on Calle Cazador, under the name ‘Tejidos El Tren’, which paid homage to its original connection with the railway line. Finally, in 2010, they moved to their current location at 5 Volta de la Mercè Street, adopting the definitive name ‘Teixits Es Tren’ when the business changed hands again, although Pep Forteza continued to work until his retirement in 2015.
Today, the fourth generation, led by Mayte Forteza Manera and Joan Gelabert Valls, keeps the family tradition alive, offering quality fabrics for the home and clothing, and providing friendly customer service.
