Teixits Riera
Teixits Riera is run by Biel Riera and his mother, Catalina Crespí. The history of Teixits Riera begins in 1896, when Biel’s great-grandfather opened a workshop in the village of Biniamar. In the early years there was only the workshop; but due to the high demand from private customers to buy their fabrics, in 1940 they decided to move the business to Carrer Major in Lloseta, where they also opened a shop and named it Teixits Riera.
The establishment is located in a typical village house, with two floors, which preserves the charm of its interior. The ground floor is dedicated to the shop, where the “cloth of tongues”, or ikats, are displayed. Next to the shop is the open workshop, which, when in operation, allows customers to enjoy the process of making the fabrics at the same time as they buy them. The workshop has been using the same machinery for more than a hundred years, such as the boot, the warping machine, the creel and the reeling machine. All of this is used to make the fabrics using a very ancient technique that has survived in Mallorca to the present day.
Teixits Riera, which has the distinction of being an artisan company, was awarded the Spanish National Craftsmanship Prize in 1989.
