The production of ceramics is one of the historic activities of the municipality of Marratxí. It should be remembered that the tradition of making pots and pans started in the village of Pòrtol at the end of the 17th century, and enjoyed its era of greatest growth in the 19th and 20th centuries. Using white clay extracted in the Pou del Coll area and red earth from Les Coves de Can Guidet, craftsmen produced all kinds of implements for cooking and preserving foodstuffs.  It is for this reason that the municipal council considered it important to include the ceramics shops in the Catalogue of Emblematic Balearic Establishments.

The“Emblematic Balearic Establishments” project arose from the need to protect local commerce and, more specifically, that of the most traditional establishments in the municipalities. One of the objectives of this project is to raise awareness of the uniqueness of each municipality through its emblematic establishments. Although the initiative focuses on listed shops, the rest of the commercial fabric also benefits from it, as the emblematic establishments also act as an attraction for visitors from inside and outside the Islands.

It is the local councils that identify the shops in their municipality that are eligible to be emblematic, according to an IDI manual that establishes the different categories. A shop can therefore be classified as deep-rooted (with a singular product or trade), with history (with more than 75 years in business or – exceptionally – after 50 years) and with heritage (with outstanding interior and exterior heritage elements, and intangible value). In addition, establishments that meet all three categories will be called emblematic.

The project is publicised on the website www.emblematicsbalears.es, which will grow as more municipalities join the project.

There are now fifteen municipalities throughout the Balearic Islands with a total of 113 shops listed.

The following municipalities already have classified establishments: Alaró (3), Algaida (6), Consell (5), Esporles (5), Inca (14), Llucmajor (8), Manacor (16), Marratxí (5), Pollença (9), Santanyí (7), Alaior (5), Ferreries (8), Santa Eulària des Riu (5), Sant Josep de sa Talaia (5) and Formentera (Sant Ferran , 1 and Sant Francesc Xavier , 5). By category, there are 33 emblematic establishments, 25 deep-rooted and with history, 22 with heritage and history, 1 deep-rooted and with heritage, 19 with history, 6 deep-rooted and 1 with heritage.
