Fruiteria Pepita

Pepita Ramis represents the third generation of the family business selling fruit and vegetables in the Mercat Vell. Fruiteria Pepita owes its name to its founder, the grandmother of the current owner of the business. Josefa was the one who started the business before the 1960s and later it was her daughter Eulària who ran the business. The products they sell are not home-grown, but local produce from the island. In fact, when Eulària ran the business, many farmers only sold their produce to her.

Pepita spent her entire childhood with her mother at the parade. Her daily routine was to go to school in the morning and when she finished, at midday, she would eat at the Mercat Vell and then stay all afternoon helping in the family business.

Since then, the Mercat Vell has changed a lot. According to the current owner, many stalls have been lost, as in the 1960s the Mercat Vell was full, with between 40 and 50 stalls, mostly selling fruit and vegetables. One of the most important changes she has experienced is the opening of the Mercat Nou; according to her testimony, this fact, added to the arrival of the big supermarkets and the appearance of the big hotels, made many stalls move or close down due to the lack of demand.
