Maria Janer Artesania

Maria Janer opened the doors of the current shop and workshop in 1990. Although she had already been in the trade for some time, it was not until 2003 that she obtained the Master Charter for Craftsmanship. She later received the recognition of “Marca de Garantia Artesana” for her shop, which allows her to sell the products of other Menorcan artisans.

One of Maria’s most important tasks was the painting of the current flag of Sant Bartomeu in 2001. She also restored the “cabezudos” (big-heads) that are used for the patron saint’s festivities in August, as well as the tapestry of the church of Santa Maria.

She is also responsible for the handmade designs of the RIA de Ferreries brand of sandals. The first step is to draw the design on the sandals themselves, following the fashion of the following season, which is then shared with the other designers of the company, who together choose the models to be presented the following year. Over the years, she has designed sandals with all kinds of motifs, such as cheese, sobrassada, ham, the abandoned car of Santa Àgueda, the Pont d’en Gil, the musical score of the Jaleo, among others.

For personalised orders, Maria Janer talks to her customers and captures an idea of what they want. She then makes some pencil sketches and lets the customer choose the one they like best. The final result is then printed on the fabric or surface to be decorated.
