Can Verdera
Founded by the Roig Lladó family in 1943, Can Verdera began as an esparto, wicker, and shoe shop, and since then they have been striving to satisfy the needs of their customers. Years later, their daughter, Margalida Roig, married Pep Ferrer from Llucmajor, with whom she managed the business. Today, the founders’ grandson, Sebastià Ferrer Roig, runs Can Verdera.
Although times have changed, today his philosophy is to offer a catalogue of products of the highest quality, focusing to a large extent on handmade articles, preferably made by local craftsmen. Made from natural materials such as esparto grass, margallon, raffia or hemp, Can Verdera’s star products are bags and baskets of different sizes and shapes, which always respect the initial design for which they were conceived. They also have hats and other accessories.
At Can Verdera they also offer handcrafted tools made from natural materials such as wicker, wood, raffia, etc. In their extensive catalogue there are baskets, trays, boots, woodsheds, cradles for babies, sewing baskets, chairs and trunks for children, etc.
Some of their handcrafted products are typical of the Mediterranean and have been made in the same way for centuries, as is the case with the cane and raffia brooms. This product is on the verge of extinction due to the high level of competition in the market and the fact that the artisans do not see their efforts rewarded.
Can Verdera has a long tradition in the footwear sector. At the beginning they offered espadrilles, but market demands led them to expand their offer over the years, focusing on products made in Spain, starting with the typical, simply made slippers and ending with sports footwear. However, their star product continues to be the one they started out with: the espadrille.
It is also worth mentioning that the establishment where Can Verdera is located is protected by ARCA (Associació per a la Revitalització dels Centres Antics).
